Making ready 2

I was awake at 5:15 this morning, my mind making lists of things to finish up at work, and stuff to pack for the trip.

Finally crawled out of bed at 5:45. Figured it was time to get on with it.

Made breakfast, finished reading Saturday’s Globe and Mail, and dug through email. Check.

Gathered up laundry and started the wash. Check.

Washed my bike. Check.

Here she is clean, and “naked” — i.e., with detachable luggage stripped off.

And here’s the luggage…

The top box, which sits behind me, and into which will go all the stuff I need ready access to:

  • rain gear
  • warmer pair of gloves
  • eyeglasses
  • tire gauge
  • water bottle
  • snacks
  • passport
  • phone
  • wallet
  • and maybe my “real” camera, if there’s room

And the side cases, which hold everything else. These are slick: with the turn of a key, they detach from the bike and become “suitcases” I carry in to the hotel by their built-in handles.

All set, and it’s only 9:30.

Now on to the rest of my day.

Time to drag Kendall out of bed and get her help building the new shelf unit and mirror she and Leslie brought back from IKEA in Edmonton this weekend.

Wish us luck.

  1. You will still need a cart to haul all three bags and your helmet and your outer jacket 😀 but bike trips sure teach you how to pack efficiently. Imagine if you had to share that packing space with Leslie!

    1. Thankfully the topbox stays locked to the bike. But you’re right that it’s still a slog, particularly after a long day in the saddle. If Leslie starts riding with me, we may need to pull a trailer 🙂

    1. Sorry, lady, but it’s time to get out of bed. You are going to be in a world of hurt when you have to get up for school tomorrow 🙂
